Workplace - The Do's And Don'ts Of Socializing At Work

Many of us have dated someone we met through work. It seems to be a logical place to meet others. Aside from our home, we spend most of our time at work, now more than ever. We come to know the people we work with very well. In fact we can get close to our co-workers. However, there are some pitfalls to dating people we work with. Here are the top 5 do's and don'ts to make the best of socializing at work.

DO's
Do research the repercussions of a workplace relationship. Some companies frown on them while others forbid them and can terminate you if you are found out. Make sure you know exactly what you are dealing with before starting a new workplace relationship.

Do talk about what will happen if the relationship ends. Come to an understanding with your partner ahead of time so you are prepared. Remember that you will continue to work with this person so if it ends badly you may have a rough time.

Do be realistic. Know what your risks are before starting a relationship. The truth is most relationships end so be aware that this could happen. This is not to be negative, but rather to be objective about the situation.

Do know the person well before starting a relationship. If they have had work relationships in the past perhaps you should avoid getting involved with them. Knowing the person will also help avoid the pitfalls of new relationships but at the same time can actually speed the relationship along.

Do continue to do a good job at your company. If others find out about the relationship they may think that you are getting special treatment, especially if the person is in a position of authority. Doing a great job will secure your position in the company.

Don'ts
Don't socialize during working hours. Leave the relationship at home and concentrate on work during working hours. Never let others see or hear anything that they shouldn't.

Don't discuss your relationship with others at work. Not only is it poor manners but it also puts you at risk for additional fallout if the relationship ends. Office gossip can be cruel, so avoid letting yourself be part of it.

Don't bring relationship issues to work. If there are problems agree to work them out after hours. Not only is it distracting for you but is also distracting for others around you and productivity will suffer.

Don't rely on the relationship to keep you employed. If you are involved with someone of authority don't expect them to maintain your employment. Conversely, if you are the person in charge, strive for fairness.

Don't expect special treatment at work such as fewer hours or longer lunch breaks. If anything, you should work harder to show others that your relationship is not interfering with your job. Like it or not, there are some who will claim you got preferential treatment so make sure you don't add fuel to the fire.
