The bond between a mother and son is unmistakable. There is some mystery to this sacred relationship through the ages, however, the last several decades have revealed many of the reasons the mother and son bond is so strong.

Mothers hold a special place in their hearts and minds for their sons. While daughters turn into friends, sons stay sons forever. The bond between a mother and son is very strong. Sons grow to have a healthy respect for their mothers. Because mothers are protective and nurturing, they provide a good environment in which boys can grow up.

If the emotional attachment becomes too strong it can motivate men to avoid commitment and to over-bond to their mothers. We've all heard the expression "tied to his mother's apron strings" which means that the man is overly attached to his mother. This can happen and when it does it usually requires some therapy and intervention to help the man re-adjust. A man may come to rely too much on his mother for both emotional and physical needs. The mother may take care of his physical needs by providing food and shelter, and by taking care of him. The son may not want to break the bond with his mother by caring for another woman.

Most men, however, have a healthy relationship with their mother. In order to maintain a happy and healthy relationship the two must learn to let go. Sons have often been thought of as little men and are expected to protect their mothers and families. Especially in the absence of the father figure, the son steps into this role of the family. Breaking out of this role can be difficult.

Mothers can help their sons grow through adolescence by letting go and not putting pressure on them to be the man of the house. Particularly in situations where the father is not present, it is important to establish a male role model for the son. This can be an uncle or even a grandfather. The presence of this strong model helps the boy grow into a man. The mother should take care not to rely on the son for too many things. Instead, support his independence and allow him to nurture relationships with women.

Sons need to understand that their mothers are protective and love them. They should be sure to allow room in their lives for their mothers. Partners should help the son by encouraging him to have a strong relationship with his mother.

The bond between a mother and son will always be special and should be allowed to change and grow as the son grows into a man.
