The Pitfalls Of Random Meetings

For many, random meetings may sound like the most romantic way to meet a potential partner. While the story of your first meeting may be a charming one to tell in the future, the real chances of finding a lasting relationship this way are very slim. In fact, there are actually many problems associated with meeting someone this way.

Meeting someone randomly does not give you a chance to know the person very well before you start dating. In fact, it may give the other person the opposite impression of you. They may think you are just looking for a short-term relationship and are not serious about a real relationship.

Random meetings may seem like karma but may actually be based on appearances. There are actual scientific reasons why looks play a role in who we find attractive. Our mind relates everyone we see with traits from others that looked similarly. If we had a friend who we cherished and we see someone who reminds us of them our mind automatically attaches those same feelings to this new person, based on looks alone. For these reasons, looks are not reliable when meeting new people.

By definition of the word, random meetings are arbitrary. They do not allow you the opportunity to decide to meet someone based on anything but looks and the fact that they were in the same place as you were at the same time. Random meetings can actually be dangerous. If you are alone make sure that someone knows where you are. Don't agree to go anywhere with the new person unless it is a very public place. And don't get into their car for any reason. Exercise caution when meeting someone for the first time.

Random meetings don't account for the similarities and commonalities that need to be present for a relationship to work in the long term. The person may not be a good match for you. In fact, meeting someone this way almost insures the likelihood that they are not a good match. Don't rely on this type of meeting to lead to a relationship. Although anything is possible, the possibility that the person is not right for you is more likely than not.

Keep an open mind when meeting someone through a chance or random meeting but be realistic as well. Exercise caution and care during the meeting as well as after. Use common sense instead of romance to guide you.
