* Similar to the pumped up ad, beware of those whose egos are too large. They are perfect in every way and are looking for someone just as perfect to be with. Steer clear of these!
* Be truthful in your ad. If you really want a relationship, start by being honest. You can talk about your positive traits and let the other ones off for now.
* Use a real life picture. Some of the pictures you see look like the people are models posing for a photo shoot. Use a nice picture but one that shows your genuine self.
* Look for others with similar interests. Try to sift through some of the date-speak to see the real person behind the ad. Learn to decipher the hidden meanings in some of the babble.
* Check the reputation of the site. Although most post positive comments on their site to get you to join, look elsewhere on the Internet to find unsolicited comments from people who have used the service.
* Don't pay for a year upfront. Even if it appears to be much cheaper this way, avoid it. Instead take out a trial membership or a membership for only several months. During this time you can evaluate if the site is working for you.
* Stay safe. Don't give out personal information over the Internet. If you do decide to meet make the meeting in a social setting and bring along a friend.
* Do be skeptical. Talk is cheap, especially online. Some people will take advantage of others and will tell them what they want to hear. Take your time and learn all you can about someone before taking the next step.
* While some people who meet this way do go on to marry, the reality is that the huge majority of these relationships just don't work out in the long run.
