How To Adapt To A Partner With A Different Ethnic Background

It is a challenge to adapt yourself to a person with different ethnic background, whatever the relationship is. It becomes all the more difficult, if he/she is your life partner, as you can expect difference in behavior and expectations. You would have been brought up in a different background altogether with different kinds of traditions, customs, culture and habits. While few cultures adopt more warmer, emotional and expressive ways to communicate with people, few adopt quieter ways and consider too much of emotions as weakness or ill manners.

Cultures, background, and lifestyle play a large part in the formation of a person's attitude. Sometimes, your spouse may be talkative or a very silent person and you may be quite opposite to him/her. This, basic thing may become a big problem between you both, as your spouse might expect you to spend more time with her/him talking to them, while you may not be inclined towards this. The same thing might happen if you are too religious and your spouse is not interested in the matters of God or religion, or vice-versa. You may have to visit the temple of God, even if you don't like it. Similarly, there may be difference between both of you in terms of partying, politics, pets, and so on. This may seem to be a very basic thing, but sometimes, it poses a threat to your relationship also.

Relationships can stand even different ethnic backgrounds if the basic thing exists between the partners, that is, the understanding, and respect for the other person's views. If your partner doesn't like to do something, it is better to leave him/her alone than pestering or forcing them to do. In the initial stages, they may comply with you; however, with time, they may react very badly, as the emotions piled up deep inside them may burst open one-day causing problems that would threaten your relationship totally.

Too much is too bad this is very true. Don't push anybody too much on anything they would not like to do; it would surely cause adverse effects. Remember that even your spouse is an individual human being, an embodiment of feelings, thoughts and individual opinions. Gradually, try to understand your partner, as she/he would be thrilled to know that you respect them. Let them be the same and avoid demanding them to change for your sake. Shower them with enough love so that they are compelled to adapt themselves to the new situations. Compulsions would only cause repulsion and hatred for a thing. Love is the only way to bridge the barriers of ethnic backgrounds.
