How Siblings Can Affect Your Relationship

For most of us, sibling relationships can intensely affect our lives - whether or not we get along with our siblings. Approx. 80% of humans has one sibling, and this relationship is one of the longest and lifelong relationships that we go through, so the probability of influence of this relationship is quite great. Sibling relationships have great intimacy, are expressively natural, and quite often very strong - which brings with them both advantages and disadvantages.

There could be frequent fights, jealousy and clashes among the siblings, but all together, they are friends, supportive and understanding.
In this relationship, there is normally some dissimilarity in power, as one kid is older than the other one, but there is always a similarity as both belong to the same family. One point is very obvious that there are disparities among siblings.
How do siblings react when a new sibling arrives in a family? The reactions could be unpredictable, depending upon his temperament, his age and behavior of the parents. It is normal for an older child to express jealousy or to be intentionally naughty upon the arrival of a new baby, though not all siblings do this. Some take some time to understand that the new sibling will be there permanently and after that there may be a radical change in their behavior. Siblings react positively when their parents have mentally prepared them beforehand. Often siblings start showing affection to their younger ones when the new brother or sister is about a year old, because by that time, the younger sibling has started playing with him/her and can communicate.
This relationship starts developing upon arrival of a new baby in the house and is quite smooth during childhood. There could be intimacy or fights, but siblings get a chance to interact with each other to a great extent and get opportunity to learn. The older siblings especially are a lot of help for their little brothers or sisters; they become responsible and learn to share and care for others.
Fights amongst siblings are almost unavoidable, except when there is a huge gap between their ages. These fights could be very strenuous for the parents, but again, these could be advantageous for children, especially for their social development. They learn to cooperate, negotiate and resolve the issues. Also, siblings of same-sex are more likely to get into quarrels than siblings of opposite-sex. It is also worth mentioning that siblings of same-sex can be extremely close to each another.
The other problem is that of variety of siblings. Biological siblings, stepsiblings, half-siblings, twin-siblings, foster-siblings and adoptive siblings, disable siblings etc. Different parental conduct is also an important factor.
Sometime a huge age gap may result in a not very close relationship between brothers and sisters as siblings with lesser age gap are more likely to have more conflicts and jealousy, but again it all depends on a child's individual temperament
However, while siblings bring many advantages, there are certain disadvantages too. Children with no siblings are also as social as those with siblings, and often have greater confidence, are highly motivated and also excel academically. This could be because an only child is likely to have closer association with his/her parents, who put more pressure on him/her to excel. If the pressure is not too much, it is advantageous for their development.
Finally having or not having siblings; both have pros and cons. The most remarkable thing about these relationships is their absolute variety; as no two-sibling relationships are likely to be similar.
