How Childhood Experiences Can Affect Your Relationships

Our childhood experiences definitely leave an effect on the relationships we develop when we become adults. The amount of contentment that we get in our relationship is related to the atmosphere that we observed during our childhood. If our parents were affectionate, caring and respected each other, chances of us having a more stable and cordial relationship as an adult are more. While if we were subjected to abuses, hatred, or had troubled childhood, we have more chances of a troubled relationship in our later lives.

The adult relationships are greatly influenced by the way the people have been raised during their childhood and also how their parents behave towards each other.

If the child has experienced domestic violence, corporal punishment, emotional neglect, sexual abuse, and loss of a family member during his childhood, all these experiences can have a very damaging affect on the small brain of a child. These experiences not only will lower his self-esteem, but also will affect his personal relationships gravely, when he grows up. And it is a general perception that children who grew up in troubled families usually may have to work hard to nourish their relationships.

The ugly experiences of a childhood sometimes can affect a relationship in several ways. For example, a person who has undergone some unfortunate sexual behavior as a child, such as sexual abuse from a relative or from a parent, or had received negative opinions concerning sex may grow into a sexually reserved adult or may have troubles when dealing other issues like intimacy. Children, who have been abused physically, mentally or sexually, when they turn into adults, usually worry about getting intimate in relationships. These children may possibly have a hard time building adult relations with new people who sometimes remind them of their own abusive parent. Also these people were many times more likely to be experiencing difficulties in the dealing with adult love relationships than those whose childhood were not full of these ugly factors.

Relatively, children who grew up in a stable and happy environment are likely to adjust well in their relationships.

But this does not necessarily mean that most of the people who had troubled childhood will fail to form a stable and cordial relationship when they grow.

So one has to realize the fact that providing a cordial atmosphere to our children during their childhood is very crucial for their future relationships.
