All relationships require some give and take. It is important that you are able to prepare yourself for the fact that you need to be flexible when it comes to making the relationship work.

Give and take is just that, the flexibility to give in at times to others needs while sometimes being the one who takes from the other. There is a delicate balance between give and take in any relationship. This can determine when someone starts to feel used or neglected or taken advantage of. Once these feelings start feelings of resentment soon follow. This may prove to be the end of the relationship.

To avoid anyone feeling resentment or feeling as though they are not being heard, take the time to think about how the other person is feeling. Try to make sure there is give and take in the relationship.

Practice good listening skills. Think about what the other person is saying and what feelings they have that are behind their words. If you don't understand what the other person is saying ask them to explain it further. Try to apply this to all conversations so there will be less misunderstandings. Many disagreements stem from confusion about the conversation.

You don't always need to be right. A relationship is not a competition between you two. Stop thinking in terms of right and wrong. There are many shades of gray in between. Often the other person is not so far from our way of thinking. Most issues aren't set in stone and there is some medium ground. Remember that when dealing with your partner.

Always treat others with respect, especially your partner. It's often the ones we love most who end up getting mistreated. We are usually careful not to hurt the feelings of someone we don't know well. Apply these same rules to your relationships. After all, the one we love should be someone we give our utmost respect to.

Trust others opinions. When you remember to trust them you allow them to have opinions that are different than yours. In fact, if you open your mind and allow for other opinions you just may find that you can soften your opinion on some things. Often we want to be right so badly that we fight for something no matter how silly it seems. Stand back and look at it objectively. You may find that you are fighting for your opinion just to be heard. If you can detach yourself, for a minute, from the subject and pretend you are thinking about it for the first time. You may be enlightened to find that you are able to allow yourself to change your opinion.

All relationships require some give and take. If you are unwilling to do this you are unwilling to have the relationship. Any relationship will be smoother if both people remember to keep an open mind and communicate with the other.
